Marijuana addiction is on the rise in Los Angeles. Some contribute this to the legalization of the drug in the State of California. According to recent data, 30% of cannabis users may have what experts call marijuana use disorder. Those who start using it before turning 18, are 4-7 times more likely to develop this disorder in adulthood.
Using cannabis can lead to addiction. A person is considered a marijuana addict when they can’t stop using it, even when the addict realizes it’s interfering with daily life. 2015 reports show that here in the US, around 4 million people met the criteria for this cannabis disorder. About 138,000 turned to treatment for help.
Proposition 64 is the ballot that won the legalization of recreational marijuana in California. In December 2017, regulatory framework was established for cannabis sales in the City of Los Angeles. This clears the way for medical marijuana dispensaries to start selling it to the city’s recreational users.

L.A. took its time issuing marijuana sales regulations for all adults over 21 years old. The City of Los Angeles approved around two dozen cannabis businesses to sale the drug for recreational use on January 13. Three of them have received California’s final approval stamp. Drug addiction experts suggest legalization will lead to a major increase in marijuana addicts in Los Angeles.
There are three commonly used types of treatment for marijuana addiction in Los Angeles. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a psychotherapy process that helps you find strategies that help identify problematic behaviors and correct them. Contingency management is a therapeutic approach that involves frequently monitoring the behaviors, and rewarding and or taking away rewards, based on behavior occurrences.
Motivational enhancement therapy is an intervention program that’s systematic. It was designed to encourage internal change rapidly. Instead of treating the marijuana addict, it simply mobilizes the internal resources, so the person can completely change through engaging cannabis drug treatment. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has yet to approve meds to treat marijuana addiction.
