San Francisco is a one-of-a-kind city with a typical problem: substance abuse.
Everyone knows San Francisco. It is the city of the Golden Gate Bridge, easily the best known bridge around the world. Once visitors have stood in awe looking at this nearly 2-mile-long bridge, they should take a ride on one of the city’s many classic cable cars. Next, visitors should check out the legendary prison island of Alcatraz, where none of the top prisoners held there escaped.
Of course, Fisherman’s Wharf is also work checking out, as there are sea lions and other sights there that make it worth the time. Despite all these amazing things to do, there is still a substance abuse issue in San Fran.

Substance abuse is the repeated use of a substance such as drugs or alcohol, even after it becomes harmful or has some kind of negative consequence. That is where use and abuse differ: use means just trying it or using it once in a while, while abuse means using it even though the user is well aware that it will likely have negative consequences.
People begin using substances because of how it makes them feel. Many, if not most, substances provide users with a feeling of euphoria and pleasure, and our brains are already geared to always seek pleasure over and over again. Thus, substance abuse and addiction occurs.
The type of treatment as well as the likelihood for success varies according to what kind of substance the person is using as well as whether they are abusers, addicts, or even physical dependent on the drug, alcohol, or other substance they are using.
If they are addicted, treatment will likely be a more long-term process because addicts can easily relapse and must receive enough support for months and years to come to avoid falling back into the drug or alcohol. This consistent support may consist of medication, of therapy, of support groups, and of other forms of treatment.
